David Benarroch (b. 1982) is an artist who works in sculpture, mixed media, and drawing. He lives and works between Durham, NC and Madrid, Spain.
My work delves into the fine line between intentional and incidental when I explore material expressions of dynamic concepts such as process, memories, gesture, movement, and freedom. Central to my practice is an engagement with the medium that reflects my interest in critical posthumanism. I primarily work with malleable materials which I manipulate by the use of my hands and often the materials carry both a symbolic value and a concrete use. This is an intimate, intuitive and exploratory process, driven by the “will” of the material, rather than a predefined outcome. This requires a certain ascension of control, an acknowledgment that I work with, and not “on”.
Benarroch received his BFA and MFA in Fine Arts from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, alongside his studies at l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He received international awards from various foundations and institutions, including the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Award (North Carolina, 2024); the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (New York, 2022); the SU Collection Prize (London, 2022); and the Navacerada Collection Prize (Madrid, 2021). Benarroch has exhibited in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Israel, Argentina, and the United States.
